Bhai Sukha Singh was born on 1 May 1715, the son of Ram Dhan Singh, in the family lineage of Bhai Mani Singh Shaheed, in the ancestral village Hanso Majra, which was also known as Majri. Ram Dhan’s two sons, Sukha Singh and Nannu Singh, along with their cousin, Sahib Singh, grew up looking after the farmlands they had inherited from their fathers. In the aftermath of Bhai Mani Singh’s martyrdom, the family came into prominence once again in the surrounding villages. Majri was surrounded by many villages and was inhabited by the Ranghar Muslims. The Ranghars did not like that one of their neighbouring villagers had stood against the might of Lahore’s Subedar. They were aware of the growing might of the Sikhs, and the power struggle made them nervous about their survival. Thus, there came a point when the Ranghars started to attack the village from time to time.
Sukha Singh, Nannu Singh, and their cousin, Sahib Singh, brought the villages around Hanso Majra into submission. The atmosphere was not conducive for the Sikhs, considering the fate of Guru Gobind Singh and his family and what later happened to Bhai Mani Singh at the hands of Zakaria Khan. Both Sukha Singh and Sahib Singh decided to join the Khalsa dal (Budda dal) for the safety and survival of the Sikh community, who were being pushed out of their villages along with their families. Nannu Singh stayed behind to look after the family affairs, though he was later martyred in the Battle of Sirhind.
