Bhai Mahi Singh, the great-grandfather of Mania—Bhai Mani Singh Shaheed—was associated with the Guru sahibs from the time of Guru Hargobind sahib’s visit to Hanso Majra. Since renouncing idol worship and adopting the path of Sikhism, the family were regular visitors to the Gurus at Anandpur Sahib. After Mania was left in the care of Guru Teg Bahadur, their visits to Anandpur Sahib were more frequent, and it became a regular practice for the family to visit Mania and pay homage to the Gurus. After the martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur, Gobind Rai became the tenth Guru at a very young age, and it became imperative for a member of the family to be at Anandpur to help and support Mania, as he too was young and needed the family’s care. Thus, it was decided by the family that Mania’s great-grandfather, Mahi Singh, would remain by his side. Mahi Singh moved to Anandpur and started to help Mania discharge his duties to Guru Gobind Rai, helping run the Guru’s household and look after the hundreds of people who visited Anandpur to pay their respects to the tenth Guru. On Vaisakhi of 1699, Gobind Rai founded the Khalsa Panth, creating a martial race that would protect the weak and innocent from any form of religious persecution. Gobind Rai was now known as Guru Gobind Singh, and he initiated the Khanda Di Pahul. Every man was to be known as Singh, and every woman as Kaur. Khalsa (the pure one) was derived from the Arabic or Persian word khalisa, which meant to be pure and free. On this occasion, the whole family from Hanso Majra was at Anandpur to celebrate Vaisakhi with Guru sahib.
